Influence of pitch, loudness, and timbre on the perception of instrument dynamics.

چکیده
The effect of variations in pitch, loudness, and timbre on the perception of the dynamics of isolated instrumental tones is investigated. A full factorial design was used in a listening experiment. The subjects were asked to indicate the perceived dynamics of each stimulus on a scale from pianissimo to fortissimo. Statistical analysis showed that for the instruments included (i.e., clarinet, flute, piano, trumpet, and violin) timbre and loudness had equally large effects, while pitch was relevant mostly for the first three. The results confirmed our hypothesis that loudness alone is not a reliable estimate of the dynamics of musical tones.

A Hybrid Approach to Timbral Consistency in a Virtual Instrument
The aim of this work is to make an instrument that is timbrally consistent over pitch and loudness. This particular work is not attempting to reproduce an existing instrument’s timbre, but to produce a timbrally dynamic virtual instrument that can be designed by the user. Timbre is defined by the American National Standards Institute as “that attribute of auditory sensation in terms of which a ...

This article presents ISEE, an intuitive sound editing environment, as a general sound synthesis model based on expert auditory perception and cognition of musical instruments. It discusses the backgrounds of current synthesizer user interface design and related timbre space research. Of the three principal parameters of sound—pitch, loudness and timbre—ISEE focuses on control of timbre, and af...

متن کاملExploring Instrument Blending as a Function of Timbre Saliency
Background Timbre is what enables us to distinguish two instruments playing the same note at the same pitch and loudness. The main focus of the timbre research for the last 30 years has been to determine the acoustic correlates of timbre dissimilarity space dimensions, using isolated sounds of instrument timbres. However, understanding timbre spaces of isolated tones does not help much with rea...
متن کاملModels of Timbre Using Spectro-temporal Receptive Fields: Investigation of Coding Strategies
Timbre designates all of the perceptual characteristics of sounds that cannot be described as pitch, loudness or duration. Behavioral experiments combined with multidimensional scaling techniques have proposed that a few main acoustic dimensions subserve the perception timbre for homogeneous ensembles of sounds (e.g., Western musical instrument sounds). It is unclear however whether these dimen...
